A Living Room Love Letter

The vaulted ceiling of our wide-open great room was always a favorite. After we bought the house (vacant, foreclosure, terrifying) and while we were renovating (lengthy, complicated, also terrifying), I’d look at the room as a beacon of hope for what could one day be.

After adding west-facing french doors and transom windows to let in more light, it took very little to decorate the cavernous space. (Although, TBH, we’re still hunting for a rug. Preferably shag, preferably giant. Slide into our DMs if you have a lead.) Here are some of the things that make the space home.

1. A really, really, really great couch

Joybird’s endless assortment of customizable sofas was exactly what we needed to mix-and-match our way to this dream. Kermit-colored and soft enough to sink into, this sectional comfortably fits a family of 24, and that’s only a slight exaggeration.

2. A record player

Fine, I’m obsessed with Spotify too, but you can’t beat a stash of vinyl and a record player. It forces a kind of presence we don’t exercise anymore— and it all just sounds better. We love our Crosley C20 turntable, which comes with its own speakers.

3. Textures!

We’re short one huge area rug, but we have a stash of these Room & Board sheepskins, which are delicious to throw on the ground and have underfoot. They can be mini rugs or throws or blankets or ponchos if you’re sassy, and I can’t get enough of how they feel.

4. Subtle statement art

I’m constantly navigating the fine line between sparse and empty, and finding art that’s subtle enough to place in my desired minimalism is a quest. This abstract piece fit perfectly with the space, giving it just enough personality.

5. A totally “extra” chandelier

From jump, I knew we needed a massive chandelier to crown the great room space. This one from Shades of Light is the perfect mix of Spanish Inquisition and contemporary clean lines I was hunting for.
