Art For Everyone

I had a good laugh at the cover of Architectural Digest recently, because it’s the magazine’s “Living with art” issue— as if 99% of us can relate to how wide a radius we need to give our Basquiat. Not to shit talk the world of fine art, but if you google “contemporary art,” the first hits are home decor online stores. We live in the age of Instagram, where we’re more likely to screengrab something we love than to commission it.

That’s why Society6 has always had a special place in my heart. A massive gallery of any type of art you might like, available and (praise be) accessible so that the process of collecting what moves you can be for everyone. They were kind enough to outfit our Yucca Valley home, and the process of pulling together a wishlist was a fun exercise in self discovery. Apparently, I’ve got a type, and it’s squiggly, abstrast, fun… and made to be lived with.

We tried out every piece of art for over the fireplace, and in the end were in love with the exact first one we put on our Society6 wishlist.

We affectionately rechristened it ‘the happy orgy’ and it lives in our trippy 70s-inspired bathroom.

A bleh hallway became the perfect place to hint at color.

The color blocked guest room was asking for some inverted art play.

P.S. How cute is the little dark line art piece peeking out from the mirror here? →

Wanting our guests to have a chance to interact with the art, we stacked a few canvas prints in front of the mirror in the master bedroom.

It’s a golden velvet-covered sleeping loft. Why wouldn’t it need some abstract surrealism?

This saucy minx picks up the gold in our west-facing guest bedroom so well.
